The divide and rule was one of the most effective policies adopted by the British to acquire political superiority over the subcontinent. As we know there were a large number of princely states in India. The Britishers would go to a king and would mentally make him ready to make a war against some other state. The British provided even the military assistance to the kings to do that. Finally when the other state was defeated they would share the region and gain control over it.
The 2nd aspect of divide and rule was to divide Indians on the basis of religions and caste. They were successful in creating a difference between the Hindus and the Muslims of India which ultimately led to the partition of the country at the time of Independence. Also in 1905 when Lord Curzon was the Viceroy of India, he decided to partition Bengal. At that time Bengal was the largest province of India with parts of Assam and a major portion of today’s Bangladesh included in its territories. The partition was made in such a way that East Bengal with Dacca(Dhaka) as it's capital had Muslim majority and West Bengal with Calcutta as it's capital had Hindu majority.
All though the Bengali people had realised this and strongly opposed the partition which was finally annulled in 1911
Thus they would raise differences in the people's mind so the people would fight amongst themselves which created an easy path for the British to gain political supremacy

Hey mate! Here is your answer:-
Divide and rule in politics and sociology is gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures, and especially prevents smaller power groups from linking up, causing rivalries and fomenting discord among the people. It was heavily used by British Empire in India and elsewhere.
Traiano Boccalini cites "divide et impera" in La bilancia politica as a common principle in politics. The use of this technique is meant to empower the sovereign to control subjects, populations, or factions of different interests, who collectively might be able to oppose his rule. Machiavelli identifies a similar application to military strategy, advising in Book VI of The Art of War (Dell'arte della guerra), that a Captain should endeavor with every art to divide the forces of the enemy, either by making him suspicious of his men in whom he trusted, or by giving him cause that he has to separate his forces, and, because of this, become weaker.
The maxim divide et impera has been attributed to Philip II of Macedon, and together with the maxim divide ut regnes was utilised by the Roman ruler Caesar and the French emperor Napoleon.
The strategy, but not the phrase, applies in many ancient cases: the example of Gabiniusexists, parting the Jewish nation into five conventions, reported by Flavius Josephus in Book I, 169-170 of The Wars of the Jews (De bello Judaico). Strabo also reports in Geography, 8.7.3 that the Achaean Leaguewas gradually dissolved under the Roman possession of the whole of Macedonia, owing to them not dealing with the several states in the same way, but wishing to preserve some and to destroy others.
Elements of this technique involve:
creating or encouraging divisions among the subjects to prevent alliances that could challenge the sovereignaiding and promoting those who are willing to cooperate with the sovereignfostering distrust and enmity between local rulersencouraging meaningless expenditures that reduce the capability for political and military spending
Historically, this strategy was used in many different ways by empires seeking to expand their territories.
The concept is also mentioned as a strategy for market action in economics to get the most out of the players in a competitive market.
Hope it helps you....
