When she was a child ,Helen enjoyed hunting for guinea fowl eggs and visiting the horse stables, corn sheds, and the yard where the cows were milked .She relates that she often assisted in milking the cows.
Helen had a special love of nature. Shae shared this appreciation of nature with her father ,and later with Miss Sullivan .
Though Helen could not see or hear, she used her senses of touch and smell to appreciate the beauty of nature. When she was a little girl, she spent time in the garden on her family's property.
