Explain the preparation of different cells using metal metal ion electrodes.
Answers
Metal metal ion electrode is prepared by dipping a metal into the solution of its ions. for example in a half cell of copper, copper metal is dipped into the solution of copper ions and likewise to that of zinc half cell. These electrodes are represented as, for instance: Cu/Cu2+ or Zn/Zn2+
Metal metal ion electrode consists of pure metal electrode and metal electrolyte. The metal electrode acts as anode and electrolyte acts as cathode. The cells that are formed using metal metal ion electrode are Daniel cell and galvanic cell.
In galvanic cells, the electrolyte includes copper(II) nitrate and silver nitrate and the copper rods act as electrode.
In Daniel cells, the electrode includes copper rod or zinc rode and the electrolyte includes copper sulphate and zinc sulphate.
