To prepare fabric for dyeing it must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any coating, oils, waxed etc. This is called scouring and different materials need different methods, I’ll use cotton as an example.

You need a large pot, sodium carbonate more commonly called washing soda and dish soap.

The fabric needs plenty of room to move around in the pot and you will need roughly 2 quarts to every ounce of material.

For every gallon of water in your pot, add between 2 to 3 teaspoons of washing soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of dish soap.  Heat the water until it summers then leaves it for 2 - 4 hours, the longer the better, stir with a wooden spoon every now and then when it’s ready rinse it well under cold water. You can use it wet to begin dyeing it or dry it and store it for later.
