Definition of division of powers. 2 : the principle that sovereignty should be divided between the federa lgovernment and the states especially as expressed by the Constitution of the U.S.

Both vertical division and horizontal division of sharing power have their own significance. In horizontal division power is distributed equally at the same level like legislatures and executives. It follows the checks and balances system. While in vertical division power is distributed among different levels like state government and central government. It is called federal division of power.
