Nij cultivation is a system of indigo plantation in which the planter had indigo produced on land under his direct control. The problems which arose with nij cultivation were:
1. The planters found it difficult to expand the area under nij cultivation. Indigo could only be planted on fertile lands which were already populated densely.
2. Only small plots scattered around the landscape could be acquired to plant indigo.
3. After an indigo plantation, no other crop could be grown because indigo had deep roots which deprived the soil of its nutrients.
