The process of inhalation occurs as a part of breathing in human beings as a result of pressure difference between the thoracic cavity and the external atmosphere.
When the internal (thoracic cavity) partial pressure of oxygen decreases the body tends to take in more air to equalise the pressure between the atmosphere and the thoracic cavity.
On the start of the inhalation process the diaphragm extended and the ribs move wider thus increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity, this decreases the pressure further causing a sudden inflow of atmospheric air.
