WHAT IS CENTRIFUGATION?

Centrifugation is a technique which involve the application of centripetal force to separate the suspended particles in a colloidal solution. Centrifugation is done in a centrifuge machine.

WHAT IS CENTRIPETAL FORCE?

Centripetal force is a force which acts towards the centre when an object rotates in a circular path.

PROCEDURE

There is a correlation between the size and density of a particle and the rate that the particle separates from a heterogeneous mixture, when the only force applied is that of gravity. The larger the size and the larger the density of the particles, the faster they separate from the mixture. By applying a larger effective gravitational force to the mixture, like a centrifuge does, the separation of the particles is accelerated.

EXAMPLES

1) Separating chalk powder suspended in water.

2) Removing fat from milk.

The examples of Centrifugation are as follows :-

* Separating water from washed cloths.

* Separating skim and whole milk.
