electrolysis, process by which electric current is passed through a substance to effect a chemical change.

Electrolysis is the decomposition of a chemical compound in the aqueous or fused state by the passage of direct electric current resulting in discharge of ions-as neutral atoms- at the respective electrodes. example- NaCl- Na1+ [cation] + [anion] Cl1-.
At cathode Na will gain one electron to be Na and at anode Cl losses 1 electron to become Cl.
