Inverted funnel is used in the lab. preparation of hydrochloric acid. In this an inverted funnel is attached to the source of HCl gas. The funnel is placed over a trough filled with water and the end of the funnel should touch the surface of water. HCl gas passes through the funnel and gets dissolved in water. The rate of solubility of HCl is higher than the production rate of HCl gas therefore there is a partial vacuum created in the pipe through which the gas was coming and due to atmospheric pressure the water rises through the funnel. When the water gets into the funnel there is an air gap created between the water surface and the funnel. At this point the pressure inside and outside the funnel is equal and the water falls back. This continues till water in the trough is fully saturated with HCl gas resulting in the formation of HCl acid.
The importance of funnel is that in lessens back suction of water and also increases the surface area of absorption of HCl gas.

Answer:
Hydrochloric acid is prepared by dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water using a special funnel arrangement..The funnel arrangement prevents or minimizes back suction of water ..and provides a large surface area for absorption of HCL gas... The rim of the funnel is placed so that it just touches the trough containing water. If back suction ocurrs, the water rises up the funnel and the level outside the falls creating an air gap between the rim of the funnel and the surface of water ...and the pressure outsife and inside equalize and the water which had risen in the funnel falls down again
