Spinning -Spinning is the process in which the Cotton ( Or any othe fibre) which is converted into a yarn.

Spinning is a vast area in textile field ( Even you could call it as heart of Textile) . I will just brief on the process involved in cotton yarn spinning.

Ginning: The first step involved in spinning, in which the cotton fibre is separated from the cotton seed.

Blow Room : A series of machines are set together for the cleaning , mixing ( in case of blends) and opening of fibre. This is collectively known as Blow room.

Carding: In this process the fibres are cleaned, straightened and intermingled . The out put of this is process is a continous web form of fibre called sliver.

Drawing : This process is known as drafting . In which the sliver is thinned down or drafted into thinner slivers.

Roving : In this process the sliver is drafted more with a very little amount of twist insertion . The output is known as Roving.

Spinning: This is the actual spinning , all other process which involves before hand are also known as pre spinning operations.

In this step the roving is thinned down to the required density or thickness ( Normally expressed as Count or Tex), to impart strength to the yarn twist is inserted. Twist and the count are selected based on the requirement of end use.

So the yarn is ready by the end of the spinning process. So then the process of making starts. Fabric is vastly manufactured by two methods that is Weaving and Knitting . ( There are also many other ways through which fabric is manufactured).

Weaving : Weaving is the process in which interlacement of two yarns take place through which is a fabric is made .

Most of our clothing involves which are made of weaving . Eg Shirts , trousers, suits, Denim.

The above image is a weave of simple plain weave. The horizontal yarn will be known as weft and the vertical one is known as Warp. In this alternatively the warp and weft yarn goes up and down

Different structures are woven with just changing warp and weft yarn position ( Not getting the perfect word!).

Example of different weaves : Rib , Twill, Honey comb, Jacquard.

Knitting : Knitting is the process in which a loop made out of a yarn is looped into the loop of same yarn this is known as weft knitting ( The same which is done in making a sweater) . In simple interlooping of yarns.

Most of our casual wears such as T- Shirts , Pull over ,. Shrugs , Leggings are made out of Knits.

Even in knits so many structures are available like single jersey , Rib , Terry .

So whats the difference in Knits and Woven?

You don't need to Iron an Knit top where as you need to iron your woven garment. Wovens are more inclined to crease.

More elasticity in Knits than woven ( Ya you colud stretch well :P).

More air permeability than woven.

Woven's are more durable and dimensionally stable.

Hope I have given an introduction on spinning , weaving and knitting.

Simply said: spinning is the art of combining fibers into one thread.

When knitting or weaving, you are using a thread to create something useful. For example clothing, stuffed animals or home decorati
