In girls , after reaching puberty, the immature eggs in the fallopian tubes become mature and ready to be fertilised ( fused with sperms) . If these eggs are fertilised by sperms of a male inserted through the erect penis, it forms a zygote.
If the egg is not fertilised, it becomes useless and is drained out of the body with blood through the vagina. This happens once in about every month. This is called menstrual cycle or menstruation. The first shedding is called menarche and last is called menopause.

It is a series of cyclic changes that occur in the reproductive tract of human females and other primates with a periodicity of 28 days, right from the menarche (the starting of the menstrual cycle) to menopause (stoppage of the menstrual cycle till the age of 45-55 years).
As the female reproductive system becomes operational at puberty they undergo four phases throughout the cycle till the menopause.
1) Menstrual phase: It is the phase of desquamation of endometrium and Menstrual flow/menses which continues for 3 to 5 days. It involves the discharge of blood (a total of 45-100 ml), serous fluid, cell debris and mucosal fragments from cast off endometrial lining (uterus, fallopian tube and vagina).
Note: due to a limit in character length upto 5000 words I will try to keep it short and formal.
2) Post-Menstrual/ Follicular phase: It lasts for 10-12 days which consists Recover phase (reepithelialisation of endometrium lining and mucous lining of reproductive tract which lasts about two days) and Proliferative phase (the lining thickens especially that of uterus it becomes thick upto 3 millimeters).
3) Fertility phase/ovulation: Higher levels of oestrogen and LH cause explosive growth of Graafian follicle.
4) Pre-menstruation/Luteal/Secretory Phase: It lasts for 12-14 days it is characterised by proliferation of empty ovarian follicle to form a yellow mass called corpus luteum under the influence of LH.
In the absence of fertilisation the corpus luteum degenerates about two days prior to completion of sexual cycle. LH level falls. Progesterone level is reduced. Reduced levels of both Progesterone and estrogen causes menses.
