==> Oxidation of ammonium ions into nitrite ion and then nitrite ions by microorganism in soil and water.

==> Nitrite ions are absorbed by plants as essential nutrients and, with the help of oxygen converted into plant protein.

==> Bacteria involve in nitrification are called chemoautotrophs.

==> Reaction involved in the process of nitrification are:

1).  2 NH3 + 3O2 ―→ 2NO2 + 2H + 2H2O.

2). 2NO2 + O2 ―→ 2NO3.
