The process of formation of a mature female gamete is called oogenesis. millions of gametes (oogonia) are formed on birth no gamete is produced or added after birth.
These cells start meiotic division then temporarily reach a stage called primary oocytes. Then each primary oocyte get surrounded by layer of granulosa cells and is called primary follicles. Some of the follicles degenerate during the birth to puberty. At puberty only 60 - 80 thousand primary follicles left. Then they surrounded by granulosa and form a thick layer and called secondary follicles. It completes meiotic division. Due to unequal division it forms a large haploid secondary oocyte and small polar body.
