The respiratory system, also called the gas exchange system, is the body getting rid of carbon dioxide and taking in oxygen. Carbon dioxide, a waste product, goes out of the body. Oxygen, which the body needs, comes in. The first step in this process is breathing in air, or inhaling. Inhalation means bringing air rich in oxygen into the body. Exhalation means giving out air rich in carbon dioxide from the body. The second step is gas exchange in the lungs where oxygen is diffused into the blood and the carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood. The third process is cellular respiration, which produces the chemical energy that the cells in the body need, and carbon dioxide. Finally, the carbon dioxide from cellular respiration is breathed out of body from the lungs.

Respiration is the process of breathing. The process of respiration is the intake of oxygen into body cells for breaking the food particles in order to release energy.

Oxygenated air is drawn into body through nostrils and is transported to lungs through pharynx, trachea and bronchi. There are bronchioles leading into lungs and smallest bronchioles are alveoli, Alveoli contain blood capillaries to ease the exchange of gases in lungs. In alveoli CO2 from blood is replaced by O2 and CO2 is released.

During inhalation, Diaphragm goes down and chest cavity expands when lungs is filled with air. During exhalation diaphragm and chest cavity relaxes as air is expelled out through nostrils.
