It is the process by which green leaves of plants make their own food. Photo means light and synthesis means putting together.
The following are necessary for a plant to carry out photosynthesis:
* Carbon dioxide
* Light
* Water
* Chlorophyll.
Light is mostly obtained from the sun. Chlorophyll is the green pigment present in the leaves that absorbs the sunlight. Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through stomata. Water is taken in by the roots and carried to the leaves by the stem. Using the energy of sunlight, leaves change water and carbon dioxide into a kind of sugar which is the food. This is taken by the veins and stem to all parts of the plant. A part of the food is used up by the plant for :
* Growth
* Making flowers, fruits and seeds.
* Repairing damage.
The rest is changed into starch, and stored in fruits, seeds, leaves, roots or stem which is eaten by animals.
And the plants take in carbon dioxide leaving out fresh oxygen that's why we say plants clean the air.
