Dear Student,

● Properties of carbon -

  • Carbon is essential constituenr of all living organisms.
  • Carbon is a tetravalent atom because of 4 free e- in its outer shell.
  • It can form single/double/triple bonds with itself/other atom.
  • Carbon atom to multiple bonds with other carbon atoms, called as catenation.
  • Carbon can form straight chain, branched chain and cyclic chains.

Properties of carbon:

A property of any compound has physical and chemical property.

Carbon - Physical properties:

  • Carbon has wide forms in allotropes.
  • The carbons are of various types which includes diamond and graphite.
  • This element is strongest or weakest which depends on the form of the allotropes where diamond hardest and graphite weaker ones.
  • The form of the carbon is solid where it can be brittle or made into thin wires according to the allotropes.
  • This is a poor conductor of electricity and very good conductor of heat.

Carbon - Chemical properties:

  • The chemical formal is 'C' with an atomic mass of 12.01 u.
  • Carbon combines with oxygen to give carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
  • This element does not react with either acid or water.
  • The carbon has a capability to form long chain of atoms.
  • All the living organisms is composed of carbon.
