Grouping of elements into different classes is called periodic classification of elements. This method is requires arranging the elements that are alike and separating the elements that are unlike. It helps us understand how different elements form different compounds.

The elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, and inert gases.

Classification is important because it allows scientists to identify, group, and its various such properties. For example elements that lie in the same column on the periodic table (called a "group") have identical valance electron configurations and consequently behave in a similar fashion chemically. For instance, all the group 18 elements are inert, or noble gases. It also helps us to understand how different elements form different compounds.

Hence we see that classification of elements is necessary.
