Rights of a consumer are as follows :  

(a) RIGHT TO SAFETY :  

It means a consumer has a right to be protected against the marketing of such goods and services that are harmful to life and health. Such goods are  electrical goods, pressure cookers etc.Consumers are educated to use standardised goods.  

 

(b) RIGHT TO BE INFORMED :  

A consumer has the right to be informed about the quantity, quality and price of the product. Following information should also be given on the packet or separate piece of paper : Ingredients of the product, date of manufacture and expiry, method to use, side effects, precaution required ,etc.

 

(c) RIGHT TO CHOOSE :  

The manufacture or trader should not use aggressive selling technique to sell a particular product without giving the consumer a chance to choose from alternative products available.  

 

(d) RIGHT TO BE HEARD/ REPRESENTATION :  

The right to be heard (to represent) means the consumers have been given the right to file a complaint in case if their grievance is not attended.

 

(e) RIGHT TO SEEK REDRESSAL :  

Under Consumer Protection act a consumer cheated and exploited by the manufacturer's or sellers has right to get redressal. The  government has set up many consumer court for this specific purpose.

 

(f) RIGHT TO CONSUMER EDUCATION :  

According to this right, it is the right of each consumer to acquire the knowledge of the product. It is easier for literate consumers to know their rights and take action but not for the illiterate consumers.

 

The responsibilities of a consumer are as follows :  

  • (i) Consumers should be aware about the various goods and services available in the market so that he can make a wise choice by comparing their features and prices.

 

  • (ii) A Consumer must always buy standardised goods. These goods  provide quality assurance. For example ISI mark on electrical items ,FPO marks on food items , hallmark on jewellery, etc.

 

  • (iii) A Consumer should always ask for a cash memo, as it is the proof of purchase required at the time of taking any action against a fraudulent seller or  manufacturer .

 

  • (iv) A consumer must read the labels carefully so as to have complete information about the price, quantity, ingredients, usage, contents, expiry date,etc.
