Answer:

The atmosphere is a protective layer that safeguards the earth from the harsh conditions of the solar system. ... During the day, it prevents a sudden increase in the temperature of the earth and prevents the heat to escape to the outer space during the night. It keeps the average temperature of the earth steady.

Answer:

Air is a bad conductor of heat. The atmosphere retains this heat and maintains the temperature of the earth fairly constant during the day and also throughout the year. Sun's rays falling on earth surface during the day leads to rise in temperature . However steep and sudden increase in temperature during the daytime is controlled by the atmosphere. At night, atmosphere slows down the escape of heat into outer space. Thus steep and sudden fall in temperature is prevented .The distance of Moon and Earth from sun is nearly equal. However, as compared to the Earth's surface the moon's surface lacks atmosphere. Due to this, the temperature on the surface of the Moon ranges from -190°C to -110°C as there is no atmosphere to regulate this wide range of temperature fluctuation.
