Explain the role of each of the SiO2 in the extraction of copper.

In the extraction of copper from copper matte, SiO2 reacts with iron oxide to form slag of ferrous silicate and is removed.

FeO+SiO2----- fesio3.

It acts as flux to removiron oxide as silicate (slag). FeO + SiO2 → FeSiO3 (Slag)

During the process of extraction of pure copper from copper pyrite,SiO2 acts as acidic flux which combines with iron oxide(FeO) to form iron silicate(FeSiO3).
