Thy donot react with other elements or air around them and thus hearing effect of current occurs
Nitrogen can also be used

Inert gases are stable enough.if the bulb is not filled with inert gas,the normal gases will react with oxygen and the filament will burn. It is done so to:
1.maintain pressure inside the bulb
2.prevent evaporation of filament
