Explain the role of mouth in digestion

Mouth is the part of alimentary canal where the digestion begins. The mouth have tongue which help in proper mixing of food with saliva, it also helps to taste the food. The mouth have number of teeths [ an adult have 32 teeths ] which help the foods to get soften so that it can easily pass through the oesophagus. The mouth also have salivary glands. These glands secrete digestive enzymes called saliva. This saliva contains digestive enzymes (amylase) which help in the digestion of starch.

The salivary glands in the mouth are

♦ Parotid
♦ Sublingual
♦ Sub-mandibular
