The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering election processes in India at national and state level. The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, State Legislative Councils and the offices of the President and Vice President of the country.[2][3] The Election Commission operates under the authority of Constitution per Article 324,[4] and subsequently enacted Representation of the People Act.[5] The commission has the powers under the Constitution, to act in an appropriate manner when the enacted laws make insufficient provisions to deal with a given situation in the conduct of an election. Being a constitutional authority, Election Commission is amongst the few institutions which function with both autonomy and freedom, along with the country’s higher judiciary, the Union Public Service Commission and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.It's a permanent constitutional body.

Role of Election Commission in free and fair elections:-

  • In a democratic country, it is very necessary to held a free and fair elections.
  • Elections offers a choice and fair opportunity to the people take all the major decisions.
  • When elections are about to held , no participant could use government vehicle to travel at the voting area .
  • If there is a mistake by the leader, either the rulers have to change their decision or the rulers can be changed.
  • Before the election, every party give election manifesto, in which they told the people , that they will do these things if they came in power.
  • During elections or on the election day , participating party can't change their manifesto.
  • if someone is buying the votes, and seen , the supreme court could dismiss his or her participation from the elections.
  • The minimum age should 25 for participating in elections.
  • Votes are held , people voted and the EVM(ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES) machines are locked and kept them in safe place and after some days they unlocked and the majority vote party makes the national government.
