Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 – 1882) is considered one of the greatest Italian generals. An astute politician and nationalist, he is known for his leadership and diplomacy.

 

Known as one of the ‘Fathers of the Fatherland’, Garibaldi lead several successful military expeditions, which ultimately paved the way for unification of Italy in the 19th century.

 

His popularity in Italy as well as other countries was unparalleled. Great writers of the time like Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas spared no effort in praising him and his conquests. Such was his popularity that countries like the United States and United Kingdom, never hesitated to offer financial and military assistance to Italy during his time.

Italy before it's unification, it was divided in seven states.

The Northern state were under the Hapsburg dynasty of Austria, The Central states were under the control of Pope.

Southern states were rules by Bourbon dynasty of Spain.

 Garibaldi had been one of the most celebrated Italian  freedom fighters.

Garibaldi made his first contribution in unification of Italy by inspiring corps of volunteers to serve under the Piedmontese ruler Charles Albert.

He joined the secret society ''young Italy'' , He supported King Victor Emmanuel II in his efforts to unify the Italian state.

He organized an army to achieve the unification of Italy.
