This mechanism helps to maintain a concentration gradient in the inner medullary interstitium.Presence of this interstitial gradient helps in an easy passage of water from collecting tubule thereby concentrating the filtrate(urine).

The Atlantic Equatorial Countercurrent is strongest off the coast of Ghana (Africa), where it is known as the Guinea Current.
