The French society was divided into three estates in the 17th century.

First Estate: The first estate included church and clergy. They had many privileges and were free from paying taxes levied by government.

Second Estate: Nobles and rich people were a part of the second estate and they were also free from paying taxes.

Third estate: This estate comprised of peasants. They used to work in fields of landlords and at their house. This estate was paying many direct and indirect taxes.
