The nineteenth century was a meaningful and crucial period for Maharashtra.
The introduction and spread of modem education in the early decades of the
nineteenth century engraved a deep and lasting impact on the intellectual life of
Indian society. A section of educated Indians were against the dark and dangerous
reality of women's lives, struggling hard to cope with age-old cruel customs and
ghastly grip of social subjugations embedded in the very design of architectural
habitat and stem routine that they lived in social reformers emerging out of this
section, especially in Bengal and Maharashtra, built the grand edifice of their
programme on the twin-pillars of improving women's status and breaking the barriers
of caste. Though social reformers had excluded the effects of the subjugated position
and condition of women on their health and so, women's health matters remained
imnoticed with very few exceptions, social evil customs linked to their health and
other causes of their physical and psychological health remained untouched.
