There are gram panchayats for each village or a group of villages in some districts.
The members of the panchayat are elected directly by all the adult members of the ward.
The gram panchayat comprises of members called panch and a president called sarpanch.
The gram panchayat works under the supervision of gram Sabha.
All the adult members of the village are members of the gram Sabha.
A few panchayats of a district come together to form a block or samiti or Mandal.
Many mandals together constitute the zilla parishad.
This method extends for urban areas as well.
In towns it is municipality and for cities it is municipal corporations.
Municipal chairperson is the head of a municipality whereas it is a mayor in case of a municipal corporation.
