Functions:-
It is a specialised elongated cell which is the basic unit of conduction of impulses. In the cell there a nucleus surrounded with cytoplasm. Many small branches project out of cytoplasm, which are called dendrites. One of these branches is the longest one which is called as Axon. Axon carries the impulses away from cells.
One nerve cell /neuron does not directly join with the other neuron. They have some empty space between them in which there is a very closed transportation. It is called as Synapes.
hope it helps u:)

Heya

Good morning friend :

Structure of a neuron :

A neuron consists of three main parts

(a) cell body ( soma or cyton )
(b) dendrites
(c) axon

(a) cell body : it is the main part of the न्यूरॉन which contains a true nucleus and all usual cell organelles such as mitochondria, Golgi complex, ribosomes, lysozymes, etc. Cell body contains a granular cytoplasm also known as an neuroplasm. The cytoplasm is granular because it contains basophilic granules, called nissl's granules. These are the characteristics feature of all neurons. These granules are probably associated with protein synthesis.

(b)dendrites : from the cell body of each neurone, many short and fine processes emerges these are called dendrites these dendrites serve to receive messages from other neurones

(c) axon :
the longest process of the cell body is known as axon its outer membrane is called axolemma. it internally contains the fluid called axoplasm. The axon terminates into many small knob like structures. These are called terminal buttons or synaptic terminals. The axon serve to conduct impulse from cell body to the synaptic terminals.
