A Step Ahead (Intro)
The human heart is a four-orbital muscular organ, roughly like a closed fist of a man with a two-thirds of the mass on the left side of the midline. The heart is surrounded by the pericardial sac which is lined with the parietal layers of a serous membrane. The visceral layer of the serous membrane forms the epicardium.
Layers of Heart Wall
The three levels of the tissue form the heart wallthe outer layer of the heart wall is epicardium, the middle layer is myocardium, and the inner layer is endocardium.
Chambers of the heart
The inner cavity of the heart is divided into four Chambers:
- Right atrium
- Right ventricle
- Left atrium
- Left ventricle
There are two atria thin walled cells which receive blood from veins. Two ventricles are thick walled cells that force blood from the heart. The difference in the walls thickness of the heart Chambers is due to the difference in the amount of myocardium, which reflects the strength of each chamber. Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from systemic veins; oxygenated blood from left atrium pleural veins
Heart valves
Pumps require a set of valves to flow the fluid in one direction and the heart is no exception. There are two types of heart valves which correct the direction of blood. The valve between the atria and the ventricles is called the atriventuricular valve (also called cos)
