Explain the teachings of Buddha with regard to the caste system.
Answers
Answer:
The foundation if Buddha's doctrines was based on Four Noble Truths which he emphasised in his teachings. The four Noble Truths were:
1.The world is full of sorrow and suffering.
2.The main cause of suffering is man's desire for sensual pleasures and earthly possession.
3.Suffering can be removed by getting rid of desires.
The caste system prevailed at the time of Buddha; however, Buddha strongly condemned it. Through his multiple sermons, Buddha always asserted on the universal oneness of humankind. He stated that a person does not become Brahman by birth, nor does he become a non-Brahman. The work determines the 'Varna' of the person. He explained that by profession, a person would become a warrior and work will only define his competence to become a priest or farmer. Buddha also stated that the four distinctions of the society are not divine.
