Atherosclerosis: A process of progressivethickening and hardening of the walls of medium-sized and large arteries as a result of fat deposits on their inner lining.
Risk factors for atherosclerosis include high levels of "bad" cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, diabetesand a genetic family history of atherosclerotic disease.
Atherosclerosis is responsible for much coronary artery disease (angina and heart attacks) and many strokes.

Answer:

Atherosclerosis is a condition where there is a cholesterol build up found in the arteries of heart.

The thin lining in the heart that helps in the smooth flow of blood found in artery is called endothelium. The damage of this endothelium results in the deposition of cholesterol and causes atherosclerosis disease.

White blood cells are sometimes sent by the body at the area of cholesterol deposition, to clear out the build up, but it too might get stuck resulting in plaque formation and severity of the disease.
