An atom or group of atoms that replaces hydrogen in an organic compound. Functional groups define the structure of a family of compounds and determine its properties. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups are functional groups that define the compounds they are part of as organic acids and alcohols, respectively.
For example, -OH, the hydroxyl group that characterizes alcohols, is an oxygen with a hydrogen attached.

The functional group is defined as an atom or group of atoms joined in a specific manner, which gives the chemical properties of the organic compound and are the centers for chemical reactivity.
Example: Alcohol group have a formula of -OH
i.e C2H5OH (Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol)
