In France of the old Regime, the society was divided into 3 parts.
(I) 1st Estate -Clergy
(II) 2nd Estate -Nobility
(III) 3rd Estate
Clergy were the people associated with Church activities and included priests. Nobility were the friends and relatives of the King of France. The Clergy and the Nobility enjoyed feudal privileges, they had the right to collect revenue and even impose their own taxes. They themselves had exemption from paying taxes. The burden of paying taxes was taken by the Third Estate alone, which consisted of ordinary people comprising of about 90% of the population. They included professionals like lawyers, big businessmen and also small businessmen and peasants.
