Basic criteria such as nature of cell, cellularity and mode of nutrition were used by Whittaker to classify the whole living organisms into five kingdoms.

Nature of cell relates to the presence or absence of membrane-bound organelles in it. On the basis of this category, we  can classify living organisms into two broad categories—prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Prokaryotes such as all bacteria show prokaryotic organization of cell. They have poorly developed nuclear material called nucleoid and no membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotes such as protozoans, fungi, plants and animals have well developed genetic material called nucleus and all membrane bound organelles.

Cellularity refers to number of cells present in an organism. Unicellur organisms such as bacteria, protozoans are made of single cell while multicellar organism such as many fungi,  plants and animals are made of many cells.

Mode of nutrition categorise all living organisms into autotrophs and heterotrophs.
