There were three types of cities that emerged in 18th century India.

They can be described as follows.

(1) Pilgrimage and religious cities like Puri, Allahabad, Varanasi, etc. developed during the period where people could visit and carry out religious activities.

(2) Some cities were prominent as the seats of power and were developed with an aim to offer good administration by the rulers. Such cities include Mysore, Kannauj, delhi, Patna, etc.

(3) The development of commercial towns also began to take place during the period so that they were designed as trade centers for the domestic as well as international markets of that time.

They were mostly located on the trading routes for easy accessibility. e.g., Surat, Mirzapur, Lahore, etc.
