The polarizing power of alkaline metals and alkaline earth metals varies. That of the alkaline earth metals is higher compared to that of alkaline metals due to their smaller size. The alkaline earth metals are said to have a higher ability to distort the oxygen cloud compared to the alkaline metals. This means that their effort to shear the oxygen’s electron is higher. Therefore, slight heating breaks the bond existing between the oxygen and metal atom. This makes their the thermal stability of their exosalts less stable compared to that of alkaline metals’ exosalts

Explanation:

  • As we move downwards the group, thermal stability of the Oxo salts of “alkali and alkaline earth metals” are increases.
  • Group 1 and Group 2 elements are generally known as alkali and alkaline earth metals.
  • The thermal stability of Oxo salts are increase as we move down to the group for alkali and alkaline earth metals because increase the size of cation and decreases its polarizing power.
  • Oxo salts of alkaline metals are more stable than the alkaline earth metal oxosalts because it have small cations .
