The slave trade began in the 17th century when French merchants sailed to the African coasts, where they bought slaves from the local chieftains. These slaves were then branded, shackled and then packed tightly into ships for a 3 month long voyage across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Slavery was abolished in France by the Constitution of 1791 but it was not extended to all French subjects including those in the colonies.

The trade of slaves conducted between three countries including Europe, Africa and America came to be known as the triangular slave trade. Since the 17th century, the merchants from France sailed from the harbors of Nantes and Bordeaux to Africa where they purchased serfs from the regional kingdoms.

Though in France, the National Assembly held discussions and debates on the eradication of slavery, it did not execute any act fretting opposition from the businessmen whose revenue was depended on the slave business. It was in the year 1794 that the convention implemented a law to ban slavery in the French overseas territories. However, the law remains in their actual position only for ten years as when Napoleon became the emperor of France he reintroduced slavery in France. Finally, an end to slavery in France and its colonies came in the year 1848.
