Infrastructure is divided into two categories which are economic and social. (i) Social Infrastructure Infrastructure related with energy transportation and communication all come under the economic and the infrastructure related with education, health and housing are come under the social infrastructure. (ii) Economic Infrastructure The economic growth attained with the help of economic infrastructure is incomplete without human development. The basic functions of society that are necessary to transport resources; and people, produce and trade all are Incomplete without money or economic support. Thus one infrastructure supports the other. Hence, they both are interdependent.

Infrastructure is broadly categorised as
(i) Social Infrastructure It refers to the core elements of social change which serve as a foundation for the process of social development of a country. It contributes to economic processes indirectly and from outside the system of production and distribution. e.g. educational institutions, hospitals, sanitary conditions and housing facilities, etc.
(ii) Economic Infrastructure It refers to all such elements of economic change which serve as a foundation for the process of economic growth. e.g. transportation, communication, energy/power, etc.
Quality of economic infrastructure can he improved by improving social infrastructure.
