Answer:

In a democracy, it is the people who give powers to the government. The people choose their representatives through elections, who then form the government. The representatives are elected for a fixed period of time (five years in case of India). The real power thus lies in the hands of people who elect their leaders. Unlike in a monarchy, where the king does not have to explain or defend his actions and decisions, in a democratic form of government, the government has to explain its actions and justify its decisions to the people. If the people are unhappy with the present government, they can cast them out in the next elections.

India is a democracy. It is a government by the people, for the people and of the people. Democratic governments in our times are referred to as representative democracies. Most countries at present follow this system where people elect their representatives through elections. These representatives then form the government and make decisions for the people and the country. Thus, people do not participate directly in governing the country. 3.

In direct democracy, all the citizens collectively take decisions relating to governance. This is possible only in countries which have small populations.
