There are 5 types of settlement classified according to their pattern,
- Isolated,
- Dispersed,
- Nucleated,
- Linear.
There are two main types of settlements which are:
- Rural- Settlements which develop around a pond, lake, river, main road or a railway line and generally in india there are not much facilites in rural areas.the density of population in very low. mostly in rural areas the polution level in low.
- Urban - Urban settlements are usuasly large. they are densely populated with many people.
urban settlements have mostly non-agricultural occupations, while rural settlements have mostly agricultural occupations. For example, many farmers live in a sparsely populated area, and far fewer of them live in a densely populated city.

1. Permanent Settlement which implies settling down in a place by human beings for a longer duration.
2. Temporary settlement implies settling down in a place for shorter duration.The nomads keep on changing settlements as they are depended on occupations like hunting,food gathering, shifting cultivation,pastoralism etc. .
