Italy was unified by the efforts of three of its great leaders—Giuseppe Mazzini, Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
By the mid-nineteenth century, Italy was divided into seven states which were ruled by different dynasties. Only Sardinia–Piedmont was ruled by the Italian royal house.
During 1930s, Mazzini tried to formulate a programme of a united Italy. For achieving this aim, he formed a secret society called Young Italy.
Cavour was the Chief Minister of Italy who led the movement to unify various Italian states.
By a series of tactful diplomatic alliances with France, Sardinia–Piedmont defeated the Austrian troops in 1859 and brought northern Italy under their control.
Giuseppe Garibaldi was another charismatic leader who along with his troops of volunteers played an important role in unifying Italy. He marched into south Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Scillies and defeated the Spanish rulers.
In 1867, Italy occupied Rome after defeating France and the Papal States.
In 1861, King Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the king of United Italy.
