Explain the uses and the harmful effects of micro-organisms.

Use of microorganisms:
1. Lactobacillus is used in setting of curd.
2. Yeast is used in making cakes, pastries, dosas and idli batter.
3. Some microbes are used to kill or stop the growth of disease causing microbes. e.g. Penicillin, streptomycin etc.
4. Microbes such as rizobium and blue green algae are used to increase nitrogen content of soil.
5. Dead or weakened microbes are used in vaccine to prevent various diseases.

Harmful effects of microorganisms:
1. microbes called pathogens spread diseases.
2. Spoil food which can cause food poisoning and even death.
3. Spoil leather products.
