The water deficit or suction force developed in leaf cells due to transpiration is responsible for pulling the water column in the upward direction (ascent of sap) . Hence, it is called transpiration pull. The magnitude of suction force is sufficient to lift the water column to any heights, even in tallest trees.

Explanation:Due to the loss of water form the stomatas at the time of transpiration ,there is lack of water in the leaves.So leaves apply the pull on the xylem for water. Xylem for absorption of water exerts the pressure on root. Hence this create the suction pressure in whole plant .This phenomenon is called TRANSPIRATION PULL
