dear !!!!
this is not bio questions .
actually this is related to physics and math .

let speed of boat /swimmer in still water = U m/sec
and speed of stream = v m/s

then,
upstream = ( U - v) m/s
e.g upstream means speed of boat /swimmer against stream .

downstream = ( U + v) m/s
e.g downstream means speed of boat/swimmer along stream .

AnsweR.

Upstream :

  • If the boat is flowing in the opposite direction to the stream, it is called upstream.

  • Upstream = (u-v) km/h , where "u" is the speed of the boat in still water and "v" is the speed of the stream.

  • Upstream motion is slower.

Downstream :

  • If the boat is flowing along the direction of the stream, it is called downstream.

  • Downstream = (u+v) km/h , where "u" is the speed of the boat in still water and "v" is the speed of the stream.
