In olden days towns , besides being small , had to be self sustaining because of the following reasons : -
There were very few roads , and not very suitable for safe and fast movement .
The mode of transport was mostly bullock cart or the like , which was very slow .
And , of course , the population was very limited and the human needs were very also limited .
Education was limited to very few and it was of gurukul type , located in jungles
