A localized electric current induced in a conductor by carting a magnetic field.
Experiment:-
Use an AC current in a solenoid with an ammeter in the circuit.
Bring a flate plate up towards the coil.
The current should increase.
Try a non conductive surface, a steel magnetic surface, an aluminum surface.
Try a surface made of several smaller pieces separated by thin insulating strips.
In each case observe the effects upon the electric current in the primary.
The higher the current the greater the loss in eddy currents.
Two Application of eddy current:-
1. An induction furnace--
The metal to be heated is placed in a rapidly varying magnetic field produced by high frequency alternating current. Strong eddy currents are set up in the metal produce so much heat that the metal melts. This process is used in extracting a metal from its ore. The arrangement of heating the metals by means of of strong induced currents is called induction furnace.
2. An induction motor:--
The eddy current may be used to rotate the rotor. When a metallic cylinder is placed in a rotating magnetic field, eddy currents are produced in it. Therefore, the cylinder begins to rotate in the direction of the field is called the principle of induction motor.
In order to reduce the eddy current loss, the resistance of the core should be increased. In other words, low reluctance should be retained.
Disadvantages of eddy current are:--
1. There is a major heat loss cycling eddy currents cause loss of energy due to friction in the magnetic circuit, especially where the core saturated. Thus there is a loss of useful electrical energy in the form of heat.
2. There is magnetic flux leakage.
3. To avoid losses due to eddy currents the core of induction coils and transformer is not constructed as a block but OG no. of thin strips.

Explanation:
Eddy currents are current loops formed over conductor surfaces due to changing magnetic flux. They are useful in induction heating, levitating, electromagnetic damping, and electromagnetic braking. They can be minimized by adding slots in the conductor surface & laminating.
