⚫CHLORINATION ⚫

The replacement it substitution of the hydrogen atoms of alkanes by the Chlorine atoms under diffused sunlight on uv light or under 400 degrees temperature is called chlorination.

EXAMPLE :--

Chlorination of Methane.

{CH_4 +Cl_2 \longrightarrow CH_3Cl +HCl}

(monochloromethane or monochloromethane)

{CH_3Cl +Cl_2 \longrightarrow CH_2Cl_2+HCl}

(dichloromethane or methylene di chloride )

{CH_2Cl_2+Cl_2 \longrightarrow CHCl_3+HCl}

(trichloromethane or chloroform )

{CHCl_3 +Cl_2 \longrightarrow CHCl_4+HCl}

(tertrachloromethane or carbontetrachloride)

◼Ethane will undergo same reaction forming

▶monochloroethane

▶dichloroethane

▶trichloroethane

▶tetrachloroethane

▶pentachloroethane

▶hexachloroethane.

where these products can be separated by fractional distillation due to difference in boiling point.
