By learning the language, they felt, the Vietnamese would be introduced to the culture and civilization of France. This would help to create an 'Asiatic France solidly tied to European France'. The educated people in Vietnam would respect French sentiments and ideals, see the superiority of French culture and work for the French.

2. Supporters of Vietnamese:

However, there were other groups of thinkers who were opposed to French being the only medium of instruction. They suggested that Vietnamese should be taught in lower classes and French in the higher classes. The few who learnt French and acquired French culture where to be rewarded with French citizenship.

Earlier the French people were tensed as they thought that if the Vietnamese would become educated then they would oppose the French and question them.But they also wished to remove the Chinese culture and bring in the French Culture.By educating the Vietnamese in French Schools and introducing French culture and teachings to them will make the Vietnamese respectful towards the French.Thus, the French began building French schools with French language as the official one.
